Top-ranked figure skater Shoma Uno takes on the role of Luffy in the One Piece on Ice show.

Uno had previously expressed a desire to evaluate his creative path forward during off-season ice shows, feeling that his performances were stagnating. Regarding his recent wins, he stated that while he was happy to get the results he wasn’t getting until two years ago, he felt he was skating for the results and not accomplishing interesting and fun skates like former men’s world champion Daisuke Takahashi.

Kahori Kanatani will direct the One Piece on Ice show, and Kenji Miyamoto (known for his work on Yuri!!! on Ice) will be the choreographer. The show will be held in Yokoyama on August 11-13 and in Nagoya on September 2-3, and will adapt the franchise’s Alabasta arc.

Eiichiro Oda began serializing the One Piece manga in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997, and the series follows Monkey D. Luffy, an aspiring pirate who seeks to claim the legendary “One Piece” treasure left behind by a legendary pirate. Along the way, Luffy gathers a crew and a ship and explores the Grand Line, encountering rival pirates and government navies.

One Piece Film Red, the franchise’s highest-selling and highest-earning film installment, was released in Japan in August 2022. Netflix is also producing a live-action series adaptation of the manga, set to debut in 2023.
