The Highly-Anticipated Video Game ‘The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum’ Has Finally Got a Release Date

The release of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum video game has been eagerly anticipated by fans for some time. Despite several delays, the game is finally set to launch on May 25th, 2023. As a story-driven action-adventure game, players will follow the journey of Gollum and experience a unique gaming adventure. The game will have a branching narrative that expands on J.R.R. Tolkien’s hints about Gollum’s backstory, creating a brand new Lord of the Rings story that fits alongside the books.

Players will navigate Gollum’s perilous journey as he chases his precious ring, from his time as a slave below the Dark Tower to his stay with the Elves of Mirkwood. As a skillful and sly character, Gollum’s split personality will also come into play, and players will decide whether to let the darker side of Gollum take over or to try and retain Sméagol’s spark of reason.

According to Daedalic Entertainment CEO, Cartsen Fichtelman, the game will tell Gollum’s story until he first appears, explaining what happened to him before Frodo and his companions find him in the Mines of Moria. Players will get to explore new places while setting the stage for events that ultimately decide the fate of Middle-earth.

The game will feature a unique gaming experience, as players will play both Gollum and Sméagol simultaneously, making decisions that could reflect either character’s personality. These choices will influence the way the game feels, such as animations, soundscapes, certain gameplay situations, and in-game dialogue.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be available on various platforms, including Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Fans can also tune into the developer’s Twitch channel at 6:30 PM CET for a gameplay showcase.

Utah Enacts Laws Mandating Parental Consent For Teens To Access Social Media

Utah has passed two new laws that will place restrictions on how social media apps can be used by teenagers in the state. Under these laws, social media companies like Meta, Snap, and TikTok will need to obtain parental permission before teenagers can create accounts on their platforms. The laws also mandate curfews, parental controls, and age verification features for such companies.

These new laws could significantly impact how social media platforms handle the accounts of their youngest users, as they require parental consent, age verification, and ban companies from using features that could cause addiction among minors. However, it is still unclear how the state intends to enforce these laws and whether they will apply to teenagers’ existing social media accounts. The laws are set to take effect next March.

The potential effects of social media on teenagers, especially younger ones, have been a matter of concern for a while. In fact, earlier this year, the Surgeon General stated that “13 is too early,” referring to the minimum age when most social media platforms allow teenagers to join. While lawmakers in Congress and other states have proposed similar restrictions on social media use for teens, not everyone agrees that such laws are necessary. Some organizations, such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation, have opposed the Utah law, arguing that it could violate young people’s First Amendment rights, among other concerns raised by various groups.

France Imposes Ban On TikTok And Candy Crush For All Government Phones

The French government is expanding its restrictions on “recreational” apps on government phones, banning apps like TikTok, Twitter, Netflix, and even Candy Crush. According to the public service minister’s office, these apps pose cybersecurity risks that could compromise data for both employees and the administration. The ban takes effect immediately, but there may be some exceptions for necessary communication. The US federal government, dozens of states, Canada, the European Commission, and the UK have already banned TikTok on their workers’ devices due to similar concerns about data security. The French ban is not aimed at any specific country or app category but rather represents a general concern about entertainment apps putting government data at risk.

Levi’s To Incorporate AI-Generated Virtual Models In Addition To Human Models

Levi’s is teaming up with AI company Lalaland.ai to incorporate computer-generated fashion models alongside human models. The company frames the move as part of a “digital transformation journey” for diversity, equity, inclusion, and sustainability. Although Levi’s claims the initiative is about increasing diversity, critics argue that the company is using AI to generate the appearance of diversity while avoiding paying human models.

Lalaland.ai aims to promote diversity and inclusivity by creating “hyper-realistic” models of every body type, age, size, and skin tone, allowing customers to see how fashion items would look on someone who looks like them.

Levi’s insists that AI will not replace human models, but some view this as a potential first step toward automating the industry. The company recently underwent a restructuring plan that resulted in the loss of nearly 20% of its corporate workforce, raising concerns about its motives for incorporating AI-generated models.

Regardless, Levi’s is moving forward with its partnership with Lalaland.ai, citing its high-quality technology as a means of providing a more diverse and inclusive customer experience.

City Settles for $5 Million in Lawsuit Over Deadly Call of Duty Swatting Incident

The city of Wichita, KS has agreed to pay $5 million to settle a civil lawsuit filed by the family of Andrew Finch, who was killed by police in a swatting incident that stemmed from a Call of Duty match. The incident occurred in December 2017 and was instigated by two players, Casey Viner and Shane Gaskill, who got into a fight over a $1.50 bet. Viner recruited Tyler Barriss, a known hoaxer, to swat Gaskill. However, Gaskill provided the wrong address to Barriss, leading the police to surround Finch’s house, where he was fatally shot by Officer Justin Rapp.

Despite calls for accountability, Rapp was never charged for the shooting. The settlement comes after local officials declined to prosecute him. The incident was widely reported as the first-known fatal swatting incident and sparked concern about the practice in gaming circles. The settlement also follows reports of racist memes and jokes about killing people being traded among Wichita police officers.
