Netflix Announces New Guidelines for Password Sharing, Requiring Check-In Every 31 Days
Netflix is cracking down on password-sharing by adding seven questions about its new policy to its Help Center FAQ.
The policy states that accounts can only be shared within a single household and users will have to connect to their home Wi-Fi once every 31 days to watch content. Signing into Netflix outside of your home may lead to the device in use being blocked, though a workaround is possible. People who are on the go and want to sit still with their Netflix account may request a temporary code from the service when signing in–which will grant them access for seven consecutive days.
The number of devices that can access a Netflix account at once depends on the subscription tier:
- Basic with ads ($6.99/month) allows 1 device
- Basic ($9.99/month) allows 1 device
- Standard ($15.49/month) allows 2 devices
- Premium ($19.99/month) allows 4 devices.
Netflix started charging $3 for outside home access last year. The company is looking for a “thoughtful experimentation” solution, according to its co-CEO Greg Peters.
